My Current Project Empty My Current Project

So, as stated in my profile, I'm into game design. Currently, I'm working on a music-based SHMUP, something along the lines of Audiosurf, where you choose a song from your hard drive to play, and the 'level' is built around it a spectrum analysis of the song as a whole.

My Current Project SoundBlaster_001
Most recent screenshot. Graphics really aren't my strong suit.

It's meant to have a somewhat simplistic, accessible style of gameplay. You only use WASD to move, the mouse to aim, and click to switch weapons (you fire automatically). I'm still working out some problems with the level creation, though, which render it incredibly difficult to the point of unplayability. (Read: so many enemies it lags to death.)

There are six weapons available, two of which are assigned as defaults in the customization menu, though both can be replaced ingame by a powerup. You can also acquire powerups to enhance your speed, power, and fire rate, in addition to two shields at once that will protect you from a single hit each. Should you die, there's no limit on lives. Instead, you lose some of your points, your current weapon will change back to the default, and you'll lose all your powerups. Fall back to 0 points and it's game over.

I'd HOPED I'd have a demo by Wednesday, but I had friends over unexpectedly and ended up playing Soul Calibur 3 all night, and the next day finally played through Mega Man 8, having borrowed the Anniversary Collection from one of them, so I lost a bit of time.

More screenshots, detailed information, and the eventual demo release are to be found on my 64Digits page.

I see, its like guitar hero in the fact that you hit or shoot at things with the rythmn of the song, right?

No. Guitar Hero (and similar games like Frets on Fire, or dancing games such as DDR or BeatMania) use manually pre-defined patterns that (ideally, though they don't HAVE to) move along with the music.

Games like Audiosurf and my SoundBlaster project, which use the music to procedurally generate the level, typically sacrifice the proper rhythm aspect in favor of freedom - you just pick a song and play, without needing to find a pattern file for it.

I don't know if you've ever played Audiosurf, but if you try the beta you'll see that the blocks don't actually line up too much with the music, and the only thing that really SEEMS to be directly based on it is the angle of the track (or in other words, speed of the game).

I could conceivably do such a thing (where it actually moves to the rhythm of the music), however, that would mean defining a pattern for individual songs, and anyone who wants to play a song I haven't supported would have to set it up themself or find someone else who had, which was something I wanted to avoid.

Thanks. I'm hoping I can get someone to host online highscores for me, and have a few potential options to look into once the game is ready to have them implemented. But it's way too early to tell.

Naw. The options I have in mind are actually much better, I think. No offense meant, by the way. I have a pretty good shot, I think, at getting 64D to host it, which is my first choice. I also have my own webspace that's been graciously gifted to me by the owner of a MUD I used to code for (whose server the space is on), but I don't want to use that if I can avoid it, as this will be a potentially massive database.

Any spare computer, with the right hard and software, can be turned into a proper server. =)
